SignalScope X 13.1 Adds Support for miniDSP EARS Pro

Early this year, miniDSP released EARS Pro, a test fixture for headphones and earphones that, unlike the original EARS device, offers standard ear canal simulators (IEC 60318-4) and stereo output channels with a headphone amplifier (when purchased with the optional USB 2×2 audio interface). This makes the EARS Pro a much better device for performing dual-FFT-based frequency response measurements of both headphones and earphones. Measured: iPhone 17 Pro microphone frequency response and directivity

Frequency Response I measured the frequency response of the iPhone 17 Pro microphone by positioning a lab-grade reference microphone (PCB model 378B02) approximately 1mm away from the phone (facing the mic) in our anechoic chamber. The reference mic was connected directly to input 1 of a model 485B39 dual channel USB interface. The iPhone microphone signal was routed directly to a USB-C to 3.5mm headphone adapter using SignalScope’s audio play through function (with measurement mode enabled) and from there to input 2 of the 485B39. The response between the 2 microphones was measured with SignalScope’s Dual FFT Analyzer (on a Mac) with the microphones facing toward and away from a loudspeaker which was generating a swept sine excitation signal. Frequency Response In order to measure the frequency response of the iPhone 16 Pro’s microphone, a lab-grade reference microphone (PCB model 378B02 1/2-inch pre-polarized free-field condenser microphone) was positioned facing the iPhone mic approximately 1mm away from the phone within our anechoic chamber. The speaker was behind the PCB mic, facing the iPhone. Both microphone signals were fed into a 485B39 USB stereo ICP signal conditioner and the response of the iPhone relative to the reference mic was measured using SignalScope’s Dual FFT Analyzer. Then, the iPhone and PCB mic were rotated 180 degrees, keeping the same orientation and position relative to each other, and the response was measured again.
