SoundMeter / Suggestions for Sig Gen

The Sig Gen capabilities in SoundMeter are a very nice bonus in an already excellent app.

I have a couple of suggestions for enhancements:

Frequency of sinusoidal tone.
It would be great to have an option for the frequency slider to step the frequency in discrete 1/3-octave intervals. The frequency points should be exact 1/3-octave band centre frequencies, e.g. 251.2 Hz rather than 250 Hz.
[Another option might be for musical intervals based on A = 440 Hz, although this wouldn't be of particular interest to me.]

UI suggestions.
Delete the label 'Type:'. It's (pretty much) obvious what the buttons do.
Maybe set the resolution of the slider range limits to 1 Hz rather than 0.001 Hz? I would tend to have the slider range set rather wide (e.g. 125 Hz to several kHz), although I can see that others might want extremely fine resolution.

Signal types.
Would be nice to have square wave and other noise colours (and band limits on the noise), but I think that the current Sig Gen capabilities are already pretty nice for a sound level meter app!  :-D

I have a request for the removal of a feature!  :-o Please remove the Impulse time-weighting. It's not a good indicator of subjective response; people should be using peak sound level to characterize impulsive sound sources.


SoundMeter / First impressions of the UI

I just bought SoundMeter 1.6 (r388) for my iPhone 3G, and I'm very impressed. It seems like the best SLM app for iPhone.

I haven't delved very deeply into it today - I've just been using the iPhone's built-in mic.

I have a few first impressions about the main SLM UI in portrait orientation...

Main (large-font) digital sound level indicator.
I actually think that the display update rate is a bit too fast! It doesn't need to update any (or much) faster than once per second. I found myself immediately switching to Slow time-weighting, whatever the noise is.

Smaller digital indicators.
These are just right: great to see maximum and peak levels displayed.

I don't think that this line is even necessary. I don't know whether the area to the left of the large display is used for anything other than the 'Clip' indicator, but it seems to me that this area could be used for the indication of the quantity being measured. The indication should be as simple as LAeq, LCF etc, because the selection buttons at the foot of the screen show the full text of the weighting and response. On this part of the display, I would use Z to indicate the "Flat" frequency weighting because it seems that you really are implementing Z weighting and not just Flat weighting. If text on the iPhone doesn't allow subscripts, there could be a little graphic that showed the letters with the subscripts.
So the overall effect would be like: LAF = 72.3

Elapsed time.
Increments of 0.01 s? There's no need to have increments that are finer than 1 s. No one can control the meter to 0.01 s and the flicker of the last two digits is an unnecessary distraction for the user.
Could you put two digits in the number of seconds (e.g. 1m 07s instead of 1m 7s), please?

Bar graph.
Beautiful! But there's no need to have a decimal place in the level labels. It would be clearer with just 20 ... 40 ... etc. It would also be nice if the quantity label here could be in the format LAF, if that's possible. Would the quantity label be better placed at the left edge of the bar graph rather than underneath? This would save all the unused space to the left and right of the quantity label. The bar graph would be narrowed slightly, but it would still have the same visual appeal.

Function buttons.
I'm going to suggest that you could delete the labels 'Level Type:', 'Weighting:', and 'Response:'. I think that anyone willing to pay the purchase price for this app would be able to figure out what the function buttons do without the labels.

And in landscape orientation...
Similar comments to the above. Move the quantity label for the bar chart to the top or bottom of the bar chart and run it horizontally like all the rest of the text.

+1 for the suggestion for a preset averaging time for Leq measurements.

Perhaps fixed averaging time could be switched on or off in the SLM options (default being the existing off) with a user entry box for the averaging time. It would be useful to be easily able to set 10 s, 20 s, 30 s, 1 min, 1 h, 4 h, 8 h as the averaging times.

+1 for the compliments on the excellent app.

+1 for the suggestion for the dosimeter/sound exposure meter capability. I would be willing to pay for this capability. Obviously, the sound exposure would be due to external sources only and not reflect whatever was going in from the earbuds.

Your ultimate resource for specifications would be the international standard for sound level meters, IEC 61672-1. You would probably have to buy this from a scientific library or from the IEC website.

A complete beginner should probably just find the equations for 'time-averaged sound level' and 'frequency weighting A' on the web and start to figure out what to do from there.

Good luck making anything nearly as good as SoundMeter, though!

Thanks for your clear and informative response. On that basis, I'm going to go ahead and purchase SoundMeter.

I would have purchased SignalScope Pro (which looks very powerful) if it had overall C-weighted peak sound level, instead of just in fractional-octave bands. Hope you might find that a potential feature for a future version of SignalScope Pro.


SignalScope Pro / Question about SLM capability

I'm interested in buying SignalScope Pro for iPhone, but I'd like to check about its capability as a sound level meter before purchasing.

The website indicates that the fractional-octave-band analyzer mode includes measurement of frequency-weighted time-averaged sound level (eg L_Aeq) and maximum and peak levels, but I couldn't see where these are displayed and controlled on the example screenshot. Could you show a screenshot of these facilities, please?

Does the app indicate C-weighted peak sound level?

What are the minimum and maximum frequencies for the 'flat' frequency weighting? Does it cover 10 Hz to 20 kHz as in the IEC 61672-1 specification for frequency weighting Z?

My personal preference would be to buy your SoundMeter app and then use in-app purchasing to upgrade later to SignalScope Pro. Is that possible, or planned?
